Children’s Garden and Orchard

The initial Children’s Garden was established in a central location in the early 2000’s as a protected, fenced area where children could tend seedlings, play, and enjoy more whimsical plantings. Fruiting trees were incorporated in 2015, which allowed for the orchard designation. A one room schoolhouse was added in 2015 as an Eagle Scout project. The landscape around the school house was installed as a Service Day project with the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association (INLA). In 2017, another Eagle Scout troop built the pollinator hotels that line the fence, and the library box that rests in the center of the garden. Children also enjoy the willow tunnel, a tepee constructed from arboretum plant material, and sitting in shade under the majestic white pines.
