This does not include the loss of benefits of the estimated 4\,424\,426 trees in urban areas that were damaged or lost. What is next? Find out more as we discuss ways to create more resilient urban forests in Iowa. \nDiagnosing Tree Problems \nAaron Steil\, Consumer Horticulture Specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach \nTrees are valuable additions to the home landscape. When problems arise with the health of a tree\, it can be difficult to determine what is causing the issue. A correct diagnosis of the problem(s) is the important first step in trying to manage an unhealthy tree. SUMMARY:Fall Education Series- Part One
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Arboretum on October 7th at 9 a.m. for the first of a four-part “Fall Education Series!”  David McKinney\, Curator of Collections & Grounds\, will be speaking first about the importance of wasps. Many gardeners view wasps as a dangerous\, aggressive\,  and frightening antagonist in the garden. David will shed insight into the vastly ecologically importance of wasps: from pollination to pest control. He will give tips on how to encourage wasps to visit your garden while keeping them from areas where they may pose a threat. Gabbi Edwards\, City Forester – Ames will follow David at 10:30 am and will talk about the impact urban trees and green spaces have on those of us who experience them. Spending time outside has proven to improve human health and well-being. She will talk about the impacts\, why they happen\, and what you can do to create meaningful impact in your area.\nCoffee and breakfast pastries are provided!\nREGISTER HERE! \nMember- $15 \nNonmember – $25

SUMMARY:Tunes in the Trees - NOLA
DESCRIPTION:From their debut in The Basement of The Des Moines Social Club in March 2015\, the NOLA Jazz Band has been in demand across the greater Midwest. They have also played numerous festivals across Iowa and the Midwest\, and are highly sought after for larger private events in the Des Moines area. The band also continues to build their reputation regionally and across the U.S.\n\n\n\n\nBand members have shared the stage with jazz greats and have been inducted into the Iowa Jazz and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.  They have also played at well-known Jazz clubs such as Spotted Cat in New Orleans and the Iridium and Smalls in New York City. Recent musical groups and artists the band has played with include: \nDavina & the Vagabonds (Minneapolis) \nBria Skonberg – rising star jazz trumpet player and singer (New York City) \nMarla Dixon and The Shotgun Jazz Band (New Orleans) \nDom Flemons – bluegrass/roots/Americana artist\, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops \nAll band members have a common love for the “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans based music – real\, gutsy\, raw\, heartfelt\, and entertaining.  The band truly enjoys playing this fun music together and sees their audiences as part of their “family living room experience” for each performance. \nThe NOLA Jazz Band loves to expose audiences to this traditional jazz music\, its history\, and its emotion. One of the best compliments we’ve received from a number of audience members is “I don’t find myself liking jazz – however I LOVE whatever it is that you play!” Yes we’ve actually heard that same quote many times and it warms our hearts to know people truly enjoy our playing. Just as traditional jazz was built on collaboration and diversity so is our band. The eight members of the band are represented by five generations ranging from their early 20s to mid-60s – each with their own unique experiences and musical talents. \nTickets are free for members and $7 for non-members (can be purchased the day of the event)\nBring your lawn chair. Food truck(s) open at 5 pm (serving dinner).\nFOR MORE DETAILED INFORMATION\, SEE TUNES IN THE TREES FAQ
