Auction FAQ’S

Preview: The Iowa Arboretum and Gardens 2022 online auction is now ready for you to preview at Generous donors from the Arboretum community have contributed almost 170 items ranging from Abies to Ziplining.  There is truly something for everyone! You can begin to bid on Sunday, May 1st, at 9 a.m.

Register to bid: You can now register to bid.  Click the “Register!” button under Bidding Info. You will need to include your email to register but your full contact information (mailing address, phone number) is appreciated in case you purchase items needing to be delivered later or dinner/tour hosts need to discuss arrangements with you.  Credit card information can be added when you register or when you check out.

Categories: This auction includes garden and other tools, household items, gift certificates for services and recreational events, garden decor, food, books, and of course, PLANTS.  You can use the filters to look only for a single category such as Annuals, Herbaceous Perennials, Shrubs and Trees, or Conifers or any of the non plant categories.  Be sure to check back often as we expect to add a few last-minute donations before the auction begins.

Bidding Info: A new feature of the Auctria program this year is Bidding Info. Check this if you have any difficulties in placing a bid.  All items have a starting bid amount (also the reserve amount) and a bid increment of either $3, $5, $10, or $20.  Additions to bids must be multiples of the bid increment.

Proxy Bids: You can place a “proxy bid” – the highest amount you are willing to pay for an item. If another person bids, your proxy bid amount is raised to the next bid increment above their amount (up to your maximum).  Be sure any proxy bid is a multiple of the bid increment – this tripped up folks last year (if the bid increment is $3, you can’t bid $25, but you can bid $24 or $27).

Notifications: Auctria automatically sends notifications of “high bids”, “out bids”, “raised bids” (for proxy bids) and “won items”.  Once the auction ends on Thursday, May 5th, you will receive an invoice for your winning items.  Please follow the instructions for payment through Auctria.  If averse to paying online, you may pay in person at the Arboretum but paying through Auctria simplifies our record keeping.

Picking up your won items: Items will be ready for pick up in the Hughes Education Building during the Plant Sale hours, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th unless otherwise specified. Please read the item descriptions carefully as several donors require you to pick up the items at their businesses.  Our late spring caused nursery stock to be delayed so our volunteers were unable to collect all the items for you.

Want to volunteer?  We are still looking for a few people to help with pick up on Friday and Saturday. Shifts are 3 1/2 hours.  Contact Amber Schmidt to volunteer at

Questions?  Email with any questions.  This reaches Jan Pedersen, Lois Girton, and Mark Schneider. One of us will answer you soon.
