2016 Annual Report


2016 was an important year for the Iowa Arboretum. The Strategic Plan identified five goals to achieve during the calendar year. The following goals were adopted by the Board of Directors: Complete the Master Plan Process, Increase Membership, Promote the Arboretum, Increase Volunteerism &  Increase General Revenue from all income sources,  The Board, staff, and volunteers focused on achieving these goals during the calendar year.

2016 Highlights

  • Awarded the ArbNet Level III accreditation (Morton Arboretum program)
  • Finished installing the wedding walkway in front of the Beckwith Pavilion
  • Eagle Scout Projects:
  • One Room Schoolhouse Playhouse
  • Wood duck and Kestrel nest boxes
  • Library Boxes and Pollinator hotels
  • Woodland replacement steps (two Eagle Scouts worked on this project)
  • Partnerships:
  • Iowa Arborist Association – Arbor Day Tree Climbing for Children & Community Service Day (tree removal and stump grinding)
  • Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association – Service Day (landscaping around the front entrance sign and country schoolhouse, installation of a rain garden and the installation of a flagstone pathway in the Children’s Garden)
  • Iowa State University
  • MBA students –  Website map project
  • Business Communication students – Connecting the Arboretum with college students project & building partnerships project
  • Run for the Trees – 160 people participated in the race
  • Eco Weave – Over 400 students participated in this creative environmental art project that is displayed in the Children’s Garden
  • Signage – Installed new highway and road signs to attract visitors to the Arboretum (funded by a grant)
  • Garden Signage – installing garden signs to identify different buildings, gardens, and collections on the grounds
  • Started selling Iowa Arboretum honey in the gift shop (the honey is from the hives located on the Arboretum grounds)
  • Hired two new employees (Emily – to manage special events, weddings and administrative duties & Leah to manage the plant collection) and increased the Office Manager’s hours (to focus on membership and volunteer administration
  • Created new Development and Rental brochures
  • Weddings – Held 14 during the year
  • Special Events – Held 19 during the year
  • Spring Fever Symposium – Speaker Kevin Vaughn spoke about irises
  • Honored Ed Rinderspacher and Dick Jordan as outgoing Board members
  • New Board Member – Duane Kent

  1. I’m impressed, I must say. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s both
    educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail
    on the head. The issue is something which too few folks are speaking intelligently about.
